Severe Mud Conditions Disrupt Unbound 200 Race in Kansas
The Unbound 200 gravel cycling race in eastern Kansas faced significant disruptions early on due to muddy conditions caused by overnight thunderstorms. Within the first hour of the race, many participants were forced to dismount and either carry or push their bikes as thick mud clogged their wheels and gears. Some riders attempted to clear the mud using paint sticks, while others sought alternative routes through grassy areas. The challenging conditions quickly fragmented the field, with some competitors, including 2023 Australian champion Connor Sens, falling behind. Defending champion Cameron Jones and other top contenders like Keegan Swenson and Matt Beers also faced difficulties, though a lead group of 17 riders eventually formed. The women's race, which started later, experienced slightly less chaos but still saw significant splits in the field. The muddy terrain, reminiscent of the 2023 edition of the race, turned riders and their bikes into a uniform shade of brown.
