U.S. Supports IAEA Initiative for Nuclear-Powered Maritime Applications
The United States is backing an international initiative led by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to explore the deployment of nuclear power plants on civilian ships and floating platforms. The initiative, known as Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS), will be launched in Washington, DC, on August 26 and 27. The ATLAS initiative aims to address the legal, regulatory, safety, security, and liability challenges associated with maritime reactors. An 'Industry Day' will be held on August 25 to showcase technologies from American nuclear and maritime companies. U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright emphasized the Department of Energy's commitment to advancing American energy innovation and security. The initiative focuses on small modular reactors (SMRs), which are seen as suitable for maritime applications due to their high energy density and long operating cycles.
