Linux Foundation Launches OpenGrid Initiative to Modernize Global Power Grid Planning
The Linux Foundation has introduced OpenGrid, a new open-source initiative designed to modernize power grid planning and accelerate energy infrastructure deployment worldwide. OpenGrid aims to provide every country with access to high-quality grid planning tools by 2030. The initiative will establish a shared software architecture and interoperability standards, including open standards, schemas, APIs, and a data hub, to allow diverse tools to work together and scale globally. This effort seeks to reduce the time, cost, and technical barriers associated with planning the infrastructure needed to meet rapidly growing electricity demand. Grid planning has become a significant bottleneck, with over 2,500 gigawatts of generation, storage, and large-load projects pending in grid connection queues globally. Annual grid investment needs to double to over $600 billion by 2030, and 80 million kilometers of power lines will need to be added or replaced by 2040. OpenGrid is supported by organizations such as Breakthr...
