Meghan Markle's 'Bananagate' Incident Highlights Cultural Missteps in Royal Duties
In February 2019, Meghan Markle, alongside Prince Harry, visited the One25 charity in Bristol, which supports women involved in street prostitution. During the visit, Markle decided to write motivational messages on bananas included in food parcels for the women. The messages, such as 'You are brave' and 'You are loved,' were inspired by a similar initiative in the U.S. called 'Talking Bananas.' While some recipients appreciated the gesture, others criticized it as naive and insufficient, given their dire circumstances. The incident, dubbed 'Bananagate,' sparked a minor controversy, with critics pointing out the cultural gap between Markle's American approach and the expectations of British royal conduct.
