Atrium Health's Proposed Merger with WakeMed Faces Regulatory Delays and Concerns
Atrium Health, part of the Advocate Health system, has announced plans to merge with WakeMed Health, a nonprofit healthcare provider in North Carolina. The proposed merger includes a $2 billion investment in WakeMed's facilities, aiming to create 3,300 new jobs and expand healthcare access over the next five years. The merger would also establish the largest nonprofit behavioral health network in the state. However, the deal is facing pushback from state and local officials, who have raised concerns about potential increases in healthcare costs and a lack of transparency. The Wake County Board of Commissioners, which must approve the merger, has delayed its vote to allow more time for review.
