Heavy Rains Force Evacuation of Over 70 Hikers from West Coast Trail
More than 70 hikers were evacuated from the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island due to severe weather conditions. Persistent heavy rains rendered parts of the 75-kilometer trail impassable, according to Parks Canada. Hikers, including Patrick Laprise and his group, faced challenging conditions such as knee-high mud and fast-moving creeks. The evacuation was facilitated by Carl and Shelley Edgar, owners of the Crab Shack and the Nitinat Wilderness Charters ferry. The trail, which attracts thousands of visitors annually, saw many cancellations and postponements as Parks Canada advised against crossing rivers and creeks on foot.
