U.S. Commander Engages with Cuban Military Amid Heightened Tensions Under Trump Administration
The top U.S. commander in Latin America, Gen. Francis Donovan, recently met with Cuban military leaders near the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo Bay. This meeting, described as a 'brief exchange on operational security matters,' comes as President Trump intensifies pressure on Cuba following the capture of Venezuela's leader, Nicolás Maduro, by U.S. forces. The Trump administration has implemented an oil blockade against Cuba, maintained a naval presence in the Caribbean, and indicted former Cuban President Raúl Castro on federal charges. Despite these tensions, both U.S. and Cuban military officials reportedly viewed the meeting positively, agreeing to maintain communication on security issues. The U.S. Southern Command also noted that Donovan assessed the security of the Guantanamo Bay base and discussed the safety and operational readiness of service members stationed there.
