MUSC's Telehealth Initiative Enhances Hypertension Management Through Home Monitoring
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is advancing hypertension management by promoting home blood pressure monitoring. Dr. Thompson Barr, an Assistant Professor and primary care physician at MUSC, emphasizes the importance of diagnosing and treating hypertension to prevent complications such as heart attacks and strokes. The university's telehealth program, Remote Patient Monitoring, provides patients with blood pressure cuffs to track their readings at home. This initiative allows patients to send their blood pressure data directly to their doctors, facilitating timely adjustments in treatment. Dr. Barr highlights that maintaining a blood pressure below 130/80 is crucial, and for those with readings above 140/90, medication may be necessary alongside lifestyle changes. The program aims to improve patient outcomes by enabling more frequent monitoring and quicker response to changes in blood pressure.
