FDA Evaluates Hair Loss Risk Linked to Weight Loss Drugs Mounjaro, Ozempic, and Wegovy
Recent research has identified a potential link between the use of weight loss and diabetes drugs, specifically GLP-1 agonists like Mounjaro, Ozempic, and Wegovy, and an increased risk of hair loss. A study involving approximately 50,000 individuals has provided systematic evidence supporting this association. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently evaluating this potential safety signal. The study, conducted by researchers including those from the University of Pennsylvania, utilized electronic patient data to compare rates of alopecia among adults using GLP-1s for diabetes management against those using other diabetes medications. The findings indicated a 37% higher risk of alopecia with GLP-1 drugs compared to SGLT-2 inhibitors and a 68% higher risk compared to DPP-4 inhibitors. The hair loss observed is primarily non-scarring alopecia, which means hair follicles remain intact, allowing for potential regrowth.
