UNESCO's Tentative List Highlights Cultural Tourism Challenges and Opportunities
UNESCO's World Heritage List, which began in 1978 with 12 sites, now includes over 1,248 locations globally. Sites must first join a 'tentative list' before being considered for World Heritage status. This list currently features 1,875 sites from 181 countries. The designation often increases a site's global fame and tourism, but can also lead to challenges such as overcrowding. Experts like Jun Wen and Jonathon Day highlight the benefits and drawbacks of this status, noting that while it boosts visibility and reliability, it can also strain local resources. Sites like Machu Picchu have implemented visitor limits to manage impacts.
