Kitchen Items Identified as Microplastic Sources, Raising Health Concerns
Recent findings have highlighted that common kitchen items, such as plastic food storage containers, black plastic spatulas, non-stick air fryers, and certain tea bags, may be significant sources of microplastics. Studies have shown that these items can release microplastics and nanoplastics into food, especially when heated or scratched. For instance, a study from June 2023 indicated that microwaving plastic containers results in the highest release of microplastics. Additionally, a lawsuit against Rubbermaid claims that their containers, marketed as microwave and freezer safe, still release microplastics. The potential health impacts of microplastics include a weakened immune system and certain cancers, although more research is needed. Consumers are advised to consider alternatives like glass containers and loose-leaf tea to reduce exposure.
