Mount Nittany Health Emphasizes Skin Cancer Prevention Through SPF and Self-Exams
Mount Nittany Health is raising awareness about skin cancer prevention, highlighting the importance of sun protection and regular self-examinations. According to Dr. M. Amanda Jacobs, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at Mount Nittany Health, experiencing five or more blistering sunburns between ages 15 and 20 can significantly increase the risk of melanoma by 80% and nonmelanoma skin cancer by 68%. Given that the majority of melanoma cases are linked to UV exposure, the organization recommends using sunscreen with at least SPF 30, even on cloudy days, and pairing it with protective clothing like hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves during peak sun hours (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). Regular self-checks for new spots, changing moles, or non-healing sores are also crucial for early detection. The organization stresses that early awareness and prevention are key to managing skin cancer, which is highly treatable when caught early.
