Brien Lorenze Nominated as Commissioner of Consumer Product Safety Commission Amidst Vacancies
The White House has announced the nomination of Brien Lorenze as a commissioner of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for a seven-year term starting October 27, 2024. This nomination comes at a time when four out of five commission seats have been unfilled for several months. Lorenze, who joined the CPSC in March 2026 as Executive Director, has been instrumental in managing the agency's regulatory portfolio and spearheading initiatives to modernize injury surveillance using AI. His previous roles include serving as a senior advisor in the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network and as Chief Data Officer for the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee. The nomination follows the withdrawal of William 'Billy' Hewes' nomination in March 2026 and the unconfirmed status of Karen Sessions, nominated in February 2026. Acting Chairman Peter Feldman remains the sole commissioner, with his term expiring on October 26, 2026.
