UPMC Acquires Trinity Health System for $120 Million Amidst Nurse Staffing Concerns
UPMC has finalized the integration of Ohio-based Trinity Health System, a transaction valued at $120 million. This acquisition includes Trinity West and Trinity East in Steubenville, Trinity Twin City Medical Center in Dennison, and Trinity St. Clairsville Neighborhood Hospital, along with their associated clinics and care sites. The announcement of this significant expenditure comes as nurses represented by SEIU Healthcare, particularly those at UPMC Magee, express frustration. They highlight that UPMC spent a substantial amount on this acquisition while, according to them, not adequately addressing calls for improved staffing and support for current employees. The union cited a document from Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost detailing the $120 million cost. This development follows UPMC's earlier announcement in June of 200 layoffs and the elimination of 300 open positions within its existing workforce.
