Fast Fashion's Environmental Impact Highlighted by Chile's Clothing Waste Crisis
In Chile's Atacama Desert, a massive accumulation of discarded clothing has become a stark symbol of the global fast fashion crisis. The site, estimated to contain around 60,000 tonnes of clothing, includes garments from international second-hand trade, many of which remain unsold and abandoned. Satellite images have revealed the scale of the problem, underscoring the environmental cost of modern fashion consumption. The desert's free-trade zone facilitates the import of second-hand clothing, but unsold items often become waste, contributing to the growing textile mountain.
