India's Atmanirbhar Bharat 2.0 Strategy Aims for Energy Self-Reliance Amid Middle East Conflict
In response to the ongoing Middle East conflict, India is intensifying its efforts to achieve self-reliance in energy and nuclear power under the Atmanirbhar Bharat 2.0 initiative. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed government ministries and departments to develop both immediate and long-term strategies to reduce dependency on imports, particularly in critical sectors such as chemicals, fertilizers, and advanced machinery. This initiative is a continuation of measures introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to secure essential goods and minimize import reliance. A key focus of the strategy is to expand India's capacity in green energy, nuclear power, and thermal generation, thereby reducing the need for imported oil and gas. The initiative follows high-level reviews by the Cabinet Committee on Security, which assessed the implications of the Gulf conflict and the potential disruption of the Strait of Hormuz.
