Consumer Reports Finds Carcinogens in Braiding Hair Products
Consumer Reports has identified carcinogens and heavy metals in nearly all braiding hair products tested, including human and synthetic varieties. The investigation revealed that 29 out of 30 products contained lead, with human hair products showing particularly high concentrations. The report raises concerns about the safety of these products, which are widely used in Black communities. Some brands have responded by reviewing their testing procedures, while others have challenged the findings. Experts advise consumers to take precautions, such as avoiding certain hair treatment methods and using protective measures during installation.
