UK Immigration System Fails, Stranding Woman Due to Identical Twin Mix-up
A woman with UK settled status was left stranded abroad after the Home Office's post-Brexit immigration system misidentified her as her identical twin sister, preventing her from boarding a flight home. This incident highlights ongoing issues with the UK's digital eVisa system, which has reportedly mixed up the immigration status or photographs of over 76,000 people, including EU citizens and other nationalities. The eVisa database records full names, dates of birth, nationality, and facial photographs, which can be very similar for identical twins. Campaigners from Twins Trust and the3million, an organization advocating for EU citizens in the UK, have voiced concerns that the increasing digitalization of identity and border systems is causing more problems for twins, who are often not recognized as individuals by these technologies.
