Dr. David S. Cannom, Pioneering L.A. Cardiologist, Dies at 86
Dr. David S. Cannom, a prominent Los Angeles cardiologist, passed away on August 9 at the age of 86 due to complications from Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Cannom was a leading specialist in heart rhythm disorders and sudden cardiac deaths, recognized for his pioneering work in electrophysiology and the use of implantable defibrillators. He served as the medical director of cardiology at the Hospital of the Good Samaritan for over three decades and held a clinical professorship at UCLA. Born in Missouri in 1940, he initially attended Yale Divinity School before pursuing medicine, earning his M.D. from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1967. He joined Yale's cardiology faculty in 1973 and moved to Los Angeles in 1976. After retiring in 2022, he dedicated his time to volunteering at the John Wesley Clinic, providing cardiac care to homeless and underserved communities in downtown Los Angeles. He authored or co-authored over 175 research articles and trained many specialists in his field.
