ICO Issues Guidance for Managing AI-Generated FOI Requests Amid Rising Complexity
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has released new guidance to assist public bodies in handling the increasing volume and complexity of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests generated by artificial intelligence. The guidance aims to help FOI teams manage requests that often misquote legislation or require significant clarification. The rise in AI-generated requests has led to record numbers of FOI submissions, with 94,526 requests received in 2025, marking the highest annual total since monitoring began in 2005.
