U.S. Struggles with Fragmented Approach to Social Media Regulation for Minors
The United States is grappling with the challenge of regulating social media use among minors, as states like Utah, Arkansas, Texas, Florida, and Louisiana implement various laws requiring parental consent, age verification, and design restrictions. This comes in the wake of a Los Angeles jury ruling that found YouTube and Meta negligent in a case involving a young woman's social media addiction. Despite these state-level efforts, a national child online safety law has yet to be passed, with the Kids Online Safety Act being the most prominent federal proposal. The issue remains fragmented across state legislation, school phone bans, and privacy debates over age verification.
