Mariners in Hawaii Urged to Prepare for Active Hurricane Season
The U.S. Coast Guard is urging mariners in Hawaii to take proactive measures as the Central Pacific is forecasted to experience up to 13 tropical cyclones this hurricane season, more than double the usual number, according to the National Weather Service. Kevin Cooper, a search and rescue program mission coordinator with the Coast Guard, emphasized the importance of monitoring weather updates and preparing vessels for potential storms. Mariners are advised to secure their boats, ensure safety equipment is operational, and consider removing vessels from the water if necessary. The Coast Guard also highlighted the critical role of safety gear, such as Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs), which can alert authorities in emergencies. Personal locator beacons are recommended for individuals entering the ocean. The Coast Guard's reminders come as part of broader efforts to enhance safety during the busy summer and hurricane season.
