Severe Weather and Flash Flooding Threaten Midwest and Northeast
A cold front sweeping eastward is causing severe weather across the Midwest and Northeast. On Wednesday, storms in the Midwest and Great Lakes brought damaging winds, quarter-sized hail, and isolated tornadoes. Cities like Detroit, Toledo, Fort Wayne, and Champaign were under a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather threat. On Thursday, the cold front is expected to shift into the Northeast, bringing scattered thunderstorms, damaging winds, hail, and potential tornadoes. Over 26 million people in the Northeast, including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Baltimore, are under a Level 2 severe weather threat. Additionally, a Level 2 out of 4 flash flood risk is in place from Philadelphia to southern New York state, with localized rainfall of 1 to 2 inches possible through early Friday morning (Fox Weather, 26 Aug 2026).
