Yale Physicist David Moore Receives Moore Foundation Award for Tabletop Neutrino Research
Yale physicist David Moore, an associate professor in Yale’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, has been awarded a five-year, $1.35 million grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. This award designates him as an Experimental Physics Investigator and will enable him to expand his research into tabletop experiments for studying neutrinos and dark matter. Traditionally, neutrino research requires large-scale facilities, but Moore aims to conduct these studies in a New Haven lab. His research will involve developing levitated, cryogenic particles, trapping tiny solid particles in a vacuum, cooling them to near absolute zero, and using them to measure recoil forces and energy deposits from tritium nuclear decays. The goal is to identify a new type of tritium decay that could produce neutrinos at a precise energy, offering new ways to study neutrino properties with high precision.
