Reps. Lawler and Gottheimer Introduce 'Stop Rogue AI Act' to Establish AI Agent Guidelines
Reps. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., and Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., have introduced the 'Stop Rogue AI Act' to address the potential dangers posed by advanced artificial intelligence (AI) agents. The proposed legislation mandates the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to develop national standards, guidelines, and best practices for identifying, verifying, and controlling AI agents. These standards would include methods for entities to track AI agents on their systems, confirm their builders and operators, and monitor them in real-time. Furthermore, federal contractors and agencies would be required to integrate these standards into their procurement and deployment of AI agents. Representative Lawler emphasized the increasing integration of AI agents into government and the economy, highlighting the need to understand their capabilities, access points, and accountability to ensure they do not operate without oversight.
