Mechanics' Institute Preserves LGBTQ Children's Literature Amid Book Banning Concerns
The Mechanics' Institute in San Francisco is actively preserving LGBTQ children's literature through its Tarpey-Schwed LGBT Families Collection. This initiative comes at a time when book bans, particularly targeting LGBTQ and people of color narratives, are on the rise. The collection, which includes over 200 children's books from 1969 to 2023, was donated by Randall Tarpey-Schwed. It focuses on stories featuring families with LGBTQ members, treating these works as significant historical documents. The American Library Association reports that a significant portion of challenged books in 2025 represented LGBTQIA+ experiences. The collection aims to provide a stable home for these works, making them available for research and study, and ensuring their preservation against political and social shifts.
