Western Australia Government Updates Alcoa's Regulatory Framework Amid Environmental Assessment
The Government of Western Australia is in the process of updating the regulatory framework that governs Alcoa's operations. Alcoa, a major global producer of bauxite, operates under an exemption order as part of the state's transitional approvals framework. This order permits Alcoa to continue its operations while the Environmental Protection Authority conducts an assessment of its bauxite mining proposals. The Department of Energy and Economic Diversification, in collaboration with other agencies, is finalizing an updated mining management program (MMP). As part of this update, the exemption order must be revised to align with the new MMP. The initial step involves issuing a notice of intention to revoke the existing order. The updated MMP and exemption are expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, with a new exemption order to be tabled in Parliament subsequently. Until the new order is in effect, the current order remains valid.
