U.S. Faces National Security Concerns Over Chinese-Made Circuit Boards in AI Industry
The U.S. is grappling with national security concerns due to its reliance on Chinese-made printed circuit boards (PCBs) in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. These PCBs are essential components in electronic devices, including those used by major companies like Nvidia. The U.S. Department of Defense has expressed significant concerns about potential vulnerabilities, as these boards could be exploited by adversaries to introduce malicious components. Currently, about 60% of the world's PCBs are manufactured in China, while U.S. production has dwindled to just 4%. In response, the U.S. government is considering legislation to incentivize domestic production, including a 25% tax credit and $3 billion in grants for U.S. manufacturers. Companies like TTM Technologies and Sanmina are expanding their U.S. operations to meet the growing demand and reduce dependency on Chinese imports.
