Jeff Mitchell Departs Saskatoon Zoo for Director Role at Henry Vilas Zoo in U.S.
Jeff Mitchell, after more than six years as manager of the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo, is leaving his position to become the zoo director at Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin. Mitchell, originally from Indiana, has a background that includes roles at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, Brookfield Zoo, and Cincinnati Zoo, as well as director of Henson Robinson Zoo. His tenure at Saskatoon began with the immediate challenge of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the zoo's closure for approximately four months. During this time, he focused on staff support and reopening efforts. Mitchell is credited with significant improvements at the Saskatoon zoo, including the renovation of the Affinity Learning Centre, the creation of the Prairie Butterfly House, and new homes for zebras and bobcats. The Saskatoon Zoo Foundation praised his vision and dedication, noting over $3 million in investments during his leadership.
