Global Heatwaves Intensified by Fossil Fuel Producers
Recent studies highlight the significant role of a small group of fossil fuel producers in increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves worldwide. According to Polytechnique Insights, these 'carbon majors' are responsible for a substantial portion of greenhouse gas emissions, which have been linked to more frequent extreme heat events since the 1950s. The research, led by scientists from ETH Zurich, uses attribution studies to demonstrate the impact of these entities on climate change. The findings suggest that these producers have made certain heatwaves thousands of times more likely compared to pre-industrial times, emphasizing the urgent need for climate action.
