New York beaches are experiencing a surge in shark sightings, coinciding with the northward migration of a massive great white shark named Ernst. Detected off Montauk, New York, Ernst is part of an annual migration pattern tracked by OCEARCH. The increase in sightings is attributed to improved surveillance methods, including drones and patrol boats, as well as environmental changes like rising bait fish populations and warming ocean temperatures. These factors have led to more frequent beach closures and swimming restrictions, particularly at Rockaway Beach and Point Lookout Beach.
