U.S. Interior Department to Merge Offshore Drilling Agencies for Enhanced Efficiency
The U.S. Interior Department has announced a plan to merge two key oversight agencies, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, into a new entity called the Marine Minerals Administration. This reorganization aims to create a more integrated approach to managing offshore resources, including critical minerals. The move is intended to improve coordination and increase efficiencies across offshore leasing, permitting, inspections, and environmental oversight, while maintaining existing regulatory protections and safety standards. This decision follows the dissolution of the Minerals Management Service in 2011, which was marred by scandals and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that this reorganization aligns with President Trump's goal of greater government efficiency.
