Nine PBS Faces Data Loss After Cloud Storage Vendor Collapse, Sues Iron Mountain
Nine PBS, a public television channel, is at risk of losing over 70 years of archival materials after its cloud storage vendor, Open Source Storage (OSS), went out of business. The channel had stored over 50TB of data with OSS, which suddenly became inaccessible earlier this year. Despite having a 30-day window to retrieve its data after the contract ended, Nine PBS was unable to do so as OSS ceased operations without notice. The channel discovered that OSS used Iron Mountain's services for data storage and has sent a demand letter to Iron Mountain to preserve the data. However, Iron Mountain has not confirmed possession of the data. Nine PBS initially paused legal action against OSS after a representative claimed to have acquired the company, but communication ceased, and the representative later stated he was defrauded into the acquisition.
