Mount Everest Climbing Season Faces Challenges from Unstable Ice Block
The climbing season on Mount Everest has commenced later than usual due to a significant and unstable ice block, known as a serac, which has been obstructing the main trail. Despite the risks posed by this ice block and the high costs associated with travel and permits, approximately 410 climbers, along with their Nepali guides, are preparing for their ascent. The serac, part of the Khumbu Icefall, is a particularly hazardous section of the climb, characterized by shifting glaciers and deep crevasses. The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) has issued a warning about the serac's instability, urging climbers to exercise extreme caution. The route through the Icefall was only opened on April 29, later than usual, due to these conditions.
