Severe Storms and Flash Flooding Threaten D.C. Area Amid Wet Weather Pattern
The Washington, D.C. metro area is under a flash flood watch until midnight on Sunday, August 2, 2026, as a slow-moving storm system brings heavy rain and thunderstorms to the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) has also issued a flash flood warning for parts of Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia until 7:45 p.m. Sunday. The storms have already caused significant disruptions, including ground stops at Reagan National, BWI Marshall, and Dulles International airports. Power outages have been reported, with approximately 8,000 cases in Virginia alone. The unsettled weather pattern is expected to persist through the week, with daily chances of showers and thunderstorms. Meteorologists warn of potential severe weather, including damaging wind gusts and localized flooding, particularly in areas west of Interstate 95.
