UK Information Commissioner's Office Secures Data Protection Changes from Major AI Developers
The UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has successfully secured commitments from ten prominent AI developers, including Amazon, Anthropic, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Stability AI, to enhance their handling of personal data. These changes, which follow two years of scrutiny by the ICO, involve providing clearer information on data usage, strengthening individuals' data rights, and implementing more robust safeguards by developers. The ICO is actively monitoring the implementation of these commitments. Additionally, the ICO has initiated a six-week call for evidence to gather insights on how organizations manage data protection risks associated with AI agents, with responses due by November 20. This feedback will contribute to future guidance and a statutory code of practice on AI and automated decision-making. The regulator is also researching public concerns regarding companion and role-playing chatbots.
