Flood Risks Highlighted in Houston's Scarborough Area
The Scarborough property, a 5300-acre site located at the confluence of the San Jacinto West Fork, Spring Creek, and Cypress Creek in Houston, Texas, has been identified as one of the most flood-prone areas in the region. According to FEMA data, much of the property lies within floodways and floodplains, with the lowest portions submerged under 25-30 feet of water during major floods. Despite these risks, developers plan to construct up to 7,000 homes on the site. Conservation advocates argue that the property is better suited for preservation, similar to Lake Houston Park, to mitigate flood risks and protect downstream communities. The San Jacinto Regional Flood Planning Group has proposed legislative and regulatory changes to promote conservation and flood awareness in such areas.
