NHTSA Investigates New Door Handle Safety Regulations Amid Concerns Over Flush Designs
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating the need for new safety standards for vehicle door handles, particularly flush designs, following several incidents where doors failed to open in emergencies. This investigation was prompted by a petition concerning the 2022 Tesla Model 3, which questioned its compliance with existing safety standards. Although the petition was denied, the NHTSA is moving forward with developing new regulations that will apply to all automakers. The focus is on ensuring that door handles, especially those on electric vehicles, do not compromise safety by relying solely on electronic mechanisms.
