Cyprus Government Approves Compensation for Pig Farmers Amid Export Ban
The Cyprus government has approved a compensation plan to support pig farmers affected by foot-and-mouth disease restrictions. The plan involves the culling of up to 33,000 healthy piglets due to an export ban on fresh meat and non-heat-treated products, which has disrupted the domestic market. The measure aims to manage market surpluses and curb collapsing prices. Farmers will receive financial compensation for the destruction of piglets, with aid estimated at €50 per piglet. The plan targets micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises in the primary agricultural sector, providing assistance to reduce financial losses and manage pig populations effectively.
