Study Links Ozempic to Reduced Depression and Anxiety Risk in Diabetes Patients
A recent study published in The Lancet Psychiatry has found that medications used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, may also offer mental health benefits. These drugs, which are GLP-1 receptor agonists, were associated with fewer psychiatric hospital visits and reduced time off work due to mental health conditions. The research, conducted by scientists from the University of Eastern Finland, Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, and Griffith University in Australia, analyzed data from nearly 100,000 individuals in Sweden. The study found that during periods when participants were taking these medications, there was a significant reduction in psychiatric-related hospital care and sick leave, with a 42% drop compared to periods when they were not using the drugs. The risk of depression was reduced by 44%, and anxiety disorders by 38%.
