Valparaiso University President Advocates for Holistic Education Through Dorm Residency
The President of Valparaiso University, Rev. Brian E. Konkol, has taken an unconventional approach to understanding student life by residing in the university dormitories. This initiative, undertaken during his first semester as president, aims to provide him with a deeper insight into the student experience beyond academic performance. Through this experience, Konkol has observed the diverse needs and aspirations of students, emphasizing the importance of educating the whole person. He notes that students are not only seeking career preparation but also personal growth, belonging, and purpose. Konkol's reflections highlight the need for universities to focus on developing students' intellectual, relational, ethical, and spiritual dimensions, rather than solely preparing them for employment.
