National Science Foundation Activates America's Most Powerful Laser for Extreme Matter Research
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has initiated full-power operations of the NSF Zettawatt-Equivalent Ultrashort pulse laser System (NSF ZEUS), investing $33 million into this scientific facility. NSF ZEUS is now the highest-power laser in the U.S., designed to explore extreme states of matter. Over the next five years, the facility will host numerous research teams conducting hundreds of experiments. The laser's intensity is comparable to the average power of all sunlight on the U.S. in a single day, concentrated into an area smaller than a human hair. These experiments aim to create extreme conditions similar to those found in black holes and exploding stars within a controlled laboratory environment. The data collected is expected to expand understanding in quantum physics and astrophysics.
