Asbury Park's Turf Club Revival Aims to Restore Historic Music Scene
The Asbury Park African-American Music Project (AP-AMP) is working to revive the historic Turf Club in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The Turf Club, a significant venue in the city's African American community, was a hub for jazz and R&B music from the 1940s to the 1990s. The club hosted renowned artists like Billie Holiday and Clarence Clemons. After closing in 1999, the building fell into disrepair. AP-AMP, a nonprofit organization, purchased the property in 2022 and is now raising funds to restore it as a community venue for music and culture. The project aims to preserve the rich musical heritage of the Westside of Asbury Park, which was once a vibrant center for African American-owned businesses and music venues.
