Holocaust Survivor David Danieli Recalls Rescue by Rabbi Isaac Herzog 80 Years Later
David Danieli, a Holocaust survivor, recently met with President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem, 80 years after Danieli was rescued by the President's grandfather, Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Isaac Halevi Herzog. In August 1946, Danieli, then known as Danielski, was among over 500 Jewish orphaned children who were transported by train from Katowice, Poland, to Prague, a rescue operation orchestrated by Rabbi Herzog and his Va’ad Hatzala (Rescue Committee). Danieli's journey included being hidden by a non-Jewish family during the war, attending a German-run school, and even becoming a member of the Hitler Youth, before being sent to a Jewish orphanage where he learned about his heritage. His path to Israel was fraught with challenges, including boarding the SS Exodus in 1947, which was intercepted by British Mandate authorities, leading to his return to Europe before finally reaching Israel in 1948.
