Medical-Engineering Convergence Aims to Revolutionize Interstitial Cystitis Treatment
Recent advancements in the treatment of Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome (IC/BPS) are being driven by a convergence of medical and engineering technologies. This chronic inflammatory disease, characterized by mucosal barrier defects and neurogenic inflammation, has been challenging to treat with single modalities. Researchers are now exploring a multi-faceted approach that includes cell therapy, molecular drug therapy, tissue engineering, and combination therapies. These strategies aim to achieve comprehensive treatment through targeted regulation, tissue repair, and functional remodeling. Innovations such as bio-hybrid systems, engineered bacterial therapeutic systems, and optogenetically-controlled macrophage-nano hybrid systems are being conceptualized to provide precise regulation of the local microenvironment and targeted repair of damaged tissues.
