India's Agricultural Sector Poised to Enter Carbon Market with Policy Interventions
India's agricultural sector is on the verge of becoming a significant player in the global carbon market, driven by policy interventions aimed at integrating sustainable farming practices into carbon credit mechanisms. The country launched the Indian Carbon Market (ICM) under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) in 2023, initially focusing on energy-intensive industrial sectors. However, the emerging offset mechanism within the CCTS has created a pathway for agricultural mitigation projects. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has already approved methodologies under the CCTS Offset Mechanism for methane recovery from livestock and manure management in small farms.
