Department of Energy Selects Utah as Potential Site for Nuclear Fuel Recycling Campus
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has identified Utah as one of five potential states to host a nuclear fuel life cycle innovation campus. This initiative aims to revitalize the domestic nuclear fuel supply chain, which has seen a significant decline over the past decades. Utah's proposed facility in Tooele County would focus on nuclear fuel recycling and processing, potentially creating thousands of jobs. The DOE's selection process is ongoing, with a host agreement expected by September 30. Utah has already signed a memorandum of understanding with the DOE, outlining the potential structure of the facility. The state is emphasizing safety, community engagement, and gradual development under new nuclear regulations.
