Indian Ocean Dipole and El Niño Could Bring Wet Winter to California
California may experience a wetter and snowier winter due to the combined effects of a strengthening El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). El Niño, characterized by unusually warm waters in the central and eastern Pacific, is already influencing atmospheric circulation and strengthening the Pacific jet stream, which directs moisture toward the western United States. The IOD, a pattern in the Indian Ocean, develops when western Indian Ocean waters warm while eastern waters near Indonesia cool. This temperature contrast alters tropical rainfall and atmospheric circulation, sending waves into the jet stream that can further modify global weather patterns. Together, these phenomena could lead to more frequent Pacific storms, bringing heavy rain to lower elevations and significant snowfall to the Sierra Nevada mountains.
