Newborn with Heart Condition Undergoes Surgery Amidst Surrogacy Legal Battle
A newborn baby, Rumi, diagnosed with a severe heart condition known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), underwent a complex palliative heart surgery, the Norwood procedure, on Monday. This surgery is the first of three required for babies with HLHS. Rumi's birth and subsequent medical care have been at the center of a multistate legal dispute involving the biological parents, Omar Ahmed and Nausheen Gilkar, and the surrogate, McKenna West. West gave birth to Rumi in Texas after refusing to terminate the pregnancy, despite allegations from the biological parents that she had initially agreed to an abortion if fetal abnormalities were detected.
