U.S. Broadcast Networks Criticized for Omitting Climate Change in Heat Wave Coverage
A study by Media Matters for America has revealed that major U.S. broadcast networks, including ABC, CBS, and NBC, aired nearly 200 segments on three significant U.S. heat waves from June 29 to July 26 without mentioning climate change. These heat waves affected large parts of the central and eastern United States, breaking temperature records and prompting heat alerts for over 100 million people. Despite the clear scientific consensus linking extreme heat to human-caused climate change, the networks failed to connect the heat events to global warming in their coverage. The study highlights a stark contrast with British public-service broadcasters, who frequently include climate change context in their reporting on extreme weather.
